Two handwritten letters. One from West Point to Mrs. Greble (1853 Aug. 24) and the other from Washington D.C. to Edwin Greble (1868 July 28). Second one on letterhead of the War Department, Bureau of Refugees, freedmen, and Abandoned Lands. Both letters concerned with personal matters. There is also a photograph of Howard in military uniform and an undated obituary clipped from the newspaper.

Oliver Howard was born in Leeds, Maine, the son of Rowland Bailey Howard and Eliza Otis Howard. Rowland, a farmer, died when Oliver was 9 years old. Oliver attended Monmouth Academy in Monmouth, North Yarmouth Academy in Yarmouth, Kents Hill School in Readfield, and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1850 at the age of 19.
